Migratory Bird Management has been assisting airports with bird strike mitigation for over 20 years and was the first to use border collies to reduce bird numbers at airports in the US.
One of our newest and most exciting tools for this is the Aerolaser Handheld from Bird Control Group, which we are pioneering in a trial case study with the cooperation and permission of the FAA at a busy airport here in the Midwest. Our goal is to show that this tool is both effective AND safe for wide airfield use here in the US to:
- Prevent bird strikes
- Reduce maintenance, cleaning, and repair costs
- Reduce runway crossings for wildlife management teams
Effective
The Aerolaser Handheld is a high-powered green beam harassment tool that presents a strong visual danger to birds as it approaches them, causing them to flee. Because the Aerolaser is not species specific, it is effective against all birds that pose a bird strike risk. This laser is strong enough to work over long, open distances airfields possess even during daylight conditions.
Safe
With proper training, the Aerolaser Handheld is a very safe tool to use for wildlife management at airports. It is equipped with three main safety features to prevent injuries and incidents.
- The Horizon Safety System automatically turns the laser off when it approaches the set angle; this makes sure that the laser is always terminated on the ground and prevents it from being able to shine onto an aircraft or into a pilot’s eyes
- The Red Dot Sight allows for accurate use at long distances; this prevents the laser from being inadvertently shined at people or vehicles when the dot of the terminated laser beam is too far for the naked eye to perceive
- The Key Lock System prevents unauthorized use of the laser; this keeps it out of the hands of passersby, guests, or untrained personnel
